The Sparks Family Association was founded in March, 1953, as a nonprofit organi- zation devoted to the assembling and preserving of genealogical and historical materials pertaining to the Sparks family in America.  Membership in the Asso- ciation is open to all persons connected with the Sparks family, whether by blood, marriage, or adoption, and to persons interested in genealogical research. Membership falls into three classes: Active, Contributing, and Sustaining.  Active membership dues are three dollars per year;  Contributing membership dues are four dollars per year; and Sustaining membership dues are any amount over four dollars which the member wishes to contribute for the support of the Association. All members receive THE SPARKS QUARTERLY as it is published in March, June, September, and December.  Back issues are kept in print and are available for $1.00 per issue. The first issue of the QUARTERLY was published in March, 1953. Four indexes have been published for the years 1953 -1957, 1958 -1962, 1963 -1967 and 1968 -72.  Each is available for $2.00. A complete file of all issues of the QUARTERLY (1953 -1976) with the four indexes may be purchased for $58.00. (These 24 years of the QUARTERLY comprise 1876 pages of Sparks Family history.)

The editor of the QUARTERLY is Russell E. Bidlack, 1709 Cherokee Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan (48104). Back issues and applications for membership are available from Dr. Bidlack. The QUARTERLY is printed by off- set at the Edwards Letter Shop, 713 W. Ellsworth Road., Ann Arbor, Michigan.

FURTHER INFORMATION REGARDING FAMILY OF JOSEPH AND ISABELLA (ELLIS)

SPARKS

In the QUARTERLY of September 1971 (Vol. XIX, No. 3, Whole No. 75, pp. 1416-1418) we published a list of the children of Joseph and Isabella (Ellis) Sparks who moved from Lewis County, Kentucky, to Scotland County, Missouri, between 1850 and 1860. In an earlier issue (September 1970, Vol. XVIII, No. 3, Whole No. 71) we published an article on Caleb Sparks (born ca. 1785, died ca. 1835), father of Joseph Sparks. In a subsequent issue (June 1972, Vol. XX, No, 2, Whole No. 78, pp. 1486-1487), we published further information on some of the children of Joseph and Isabella (Ellis) Sparks. We are now able to provide additional data on still another child of Joseph and Isabella, their daughter, Amanda Sparks. These data have been provided by descendants, Charles W. Steeples and Jean Steeples Mowrer. Mr. Steeples has also provided us with a copy of the will of Joseph Sparks.

Joseph Sparks was born on March 10, 1813, a son of Caleb and Rebecca (Wilson) Sparks. Joseph died in Scotland County, Missouri, in December, 1875. He wrote his will on September 22, 1871, which was witnessed by Joseph A. Gill and Richard Lewis. He bequeathed to his wife, Isabel Sparks, a portion of his land (about one-half section) which was to be sold following her death and divided among his children. He also left her all of his "household and kitchen furniture, and one pair of work horses to be chosen by her on the place; harness for the same, two milch cows, and enough grain & hay for one year's feed and provision; enough hogs for her support [several words blurred] one corn plow, one stubble plow, one harrow, also all the poultry that may be on the farm at my death, also my family Bible and such other books as she may choose."  He directed that the rest of his land (about 230 acres) be sold and the

proceeds divided among his children: Ephraim E. Sparks, John T. Sparks, Rebecca J. Miller, Mary E. Thomas, Aminta S. Sparks, Thomas M. Sparks, Jemima Johnson, and Amanda A. Sparks. Each of his eight children was to receive one-eighth part, except that John Sparks was to receive $260 less than the rest and Mary E. Thomas was to receive $100 less than the rest. Later in his will, Joseph Sparks directed that two of his sons, Ephraim E. Sparks and Thomas M. Sparks, serve as the executors of his estate and that, instead of giving his daughter, Jemima Johnson, her share that they use $570 to purchase a tract of land to be deeded to her "for her sole use during her life and then to revert to her heirs." This will was probated on December 22, 1875.

When we listed Amanda Sparks as the ninth child of Joseph and Isabella (Ellis) Sparks on page 1417 of the QUARTERLY, we could only speculate regarding her birth date. From family records provided by Mr. Steeples and Mrs. Mowrer, we are now able to state that she was born on February 24, 1854, in Scotland County, Missouri, and died there on December 4, 1894. Furthermore, her full name was Amanda America Sparks. She was buried in the Black Oak Cemetery in Johnson Township, Scotland County. On October 12, 1876, she was married in Scotland County to Benjamin Franklin Steeples. He was born January 20, 1852, in Clark County, Illinois, the son of Henry and Malinda (Bishop) Steeples. His mother died when he was five years old and when he was eleven
his father died as a soldier in the Union Army (January 10, 1863). He was reared in the home of Judge John Thomson. Benjamin Steeples, following the death of Amanda, married, as his second wife, Hallie Jones in 1896. He died on May 17, 1919, and was also buried in Black Oak Cemetery. Benjamin F. and Amanda A. (Sparks) Steeples had three children:

1. Arthur Steeples, born Oct. 11, 1879, died Feb. 12, 1920. He married Florence C. Hummel on April 16, 1904; she was born Apr. 10, 1881, and died Oct. 5, 1946. Their children were:
(1) Mary Amanda, born Sept. 17, 1908.
(2) Robert Hummel, born Nov. 23, 1912; died Nov.13, 1975.
(3) Elizabeth Jean, born March 26, 1915.
(4) James Benjamin, born March 14, 1917.
(5) Florence Christine, born Nov. 21, 1818.
2. Marion Steeples, born 1881, died 1944. He married Viola Curry of Granger, Mo.; she was born Jan. 28, 1885, and died Aug. 23, 1958. They had children named:
(1) Lavance, born Jan. 21, 1910, died Nov. 19, 1951.
(2) Laverne, twin of Lavance, born Jan. 21, 1910, died in 1913.
(3) Verona, born May 31, 1915, died June 23, 1974.
3. Wilmer Steeples, born Aug. 20, 1891, died Oct. 28, 1946. He married Marie Hulda Choulett on Sept. 13, 1913. She was born June 11, 1892, and died June 29, 1938. Both are buried in Sedalia, Mo. Following the death of his wife, Wilmer Steeples married (second) Mrs. Maude Small. The children of Wilmer and Marie Hulda (Choulett) Steeples were:
(1) Clara Amanda, born Oct. 28, 1914.
(2) Charles Wilmer, born April 23, 1916.
(3) Benjamin Franklin, born Aug. 20, 1922.
Mr. Steeples has also provided us with a copy of the obituary of Thomas Marshall Sparks, son of Joseph and Isabella (Ellis) Sparks. This supplements the information given on page 1487 of the QUARTERLY (June 1972, Vol. XX, No. 2, Whole No. 78):
"Thomas Marshall Sparks, youngest son of Joseph and Isabel Ellis Sparks, was born in Lewis County, Kentucky, July 22, 1847 and died at this home in Granger, Mo. Jan. 17, 1912. The parents of the deceased moved from Ky. to Scotland Co., Mo. when the deceased was a small boy and settled 2½ miles north of where Granger is now located, where he has resided.

THE FAMILY OF JOSEPH AND ISABELLA (ELLIS) SPARKS, continued:

"On Feb. 25, 1875, he was married to Elizabeth Searight. He leaves to mourn his death his beloved wife, one daughter Mrs. Vic Davis, 3 grandchildren, one having died in infancy. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. T. W. Thomas and Mrs. L. J. McClellan, both of Phillips County, Kansas, and many others who reside in Missouri, Kansas & Kentucky.

"T.M. Sparks was an honored member of the I.O.O.F., an institution which he loved very much. While he did not attend the regular, he loved its Principles and especially that one where the open hand of an odd fellow is always extended to a brother. His life was like that of Jo Patha to David, when a man was down and needing help, he was there to assist him, thus exemplifying the character of a good Samaritan.

"Funeral Services were held from the residence, Jan. 20 at 1 P.M. in the presence of a large crowd. J.H. Lane had charge of the service at the house. The I.O.O.F. took charge of the body and tenderly laid it to rest in the Black Oak Cemetery using their impressive ritualistic burial service for the occations."

SPARKS FAMILIES ENUMERATED ON THE 1830 CENSUS OF GEORGIA

In the September, 1971, issue of the QUARTERLY (Vol. XIX, No. 3, Whole No. 75) pp. 1432 1433, we published a list of the Sparks families that were enumerated on the 1820 census of Georgia. Here we publish a list of the Sparks families appearing on the 1830 census of Georgia.

In all federal census records prior to 1850, only the name of the head of the household was given. Opposite each name, the members of the household, including the head, were enumerated by sex and by age group. In the 1830 census, males and females were divided into thirteen age categories. We may assume that in most households, the man listed by name as the head of that household was the oldest male enumerated and that the oldest female enumerated was his wife, but one cannot always be sure. Likewise, those members of the household younger than the head were usually his children, but in some instances apprentices, orphaned neighbor children, and relatives were also counted as members of the family. Where a woman is named as the head, we can usually assume that she was a widow.

The census taker ordinarily recorded whatever data he was told by the person at home on the day he stopped. Ages were often estimated while some members of the household might be overlooked. Sometimes parents included sons or daughters who were no longer living at home and who were thus counted again in another household. If a married son was living at home, he might be listed as head of the family even though his father was actually in charge - - whether father or son was so designated sometimes depended on who talked to the census taker.

The page number of the volume in which the name appears is given in the following record in parentheses after the name. This information is sometimes significant as an indication whether two different families were living near each other.

SPARKS FAMILIES ENUMERATED ON THE 1830 CENSUS OF PENNSYLVANIA

In the first issue of the QUARTERLY (March 1953) we listed the names of persons named Sparks who appeared on the 1790 census of Pennsylvania, with the enumeration of the household of each. In the issue of September 1976 (Vol. XXIV, No. 3, Whole No. 95, p. 1854) we presented a listing of Sparkses appearing on the 1800 census of Pennsylvania. Here we give a listing of Sparks families as copied from the 1830 census of Pennsylvania. As noted on page 1880, in the introduction to the 1830 census of Georgia, no federal census prior to that for 1850 gave more than the name of the head of each household. The rest of the family, including everyone that happened to be living in the household on the day that the census taker called., was enumerated by sex and by age group. For suggestions regarding possible interpretations that one can make from these records, please note the introduction to the 1830 Georgia census on page 1880.

QUERY

Mrs. J. E. Gebhart, 395 Cart Rd., Richmond, Indiana (47374) seeks information on the ancestry and the family of Easm (or Eason) Sparks and his wife, Cynthia A. - - - - -.   Mrs. Gebhart believes that the Easm (or Eason) Sparks listed on the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Darke County, Ohio, is her great-great-grandfather. Listed as one of his children is a William Sparks, 20 years old in 1860; he was listed as W.H.W. Sparks, 10 years of age, in 1850. Mrs. Gebhart's great-grandfather, William Sparks, was born in 1840 and died in 193-; he married Phoebe Hamilton, who was born in 1842 and died in 1932. William and Phoebe Sparks are buried at Abbottsville Cemetery in Darke County, Ohio. Easm (or Eason) Sparks was born in Pennsylvania about 1811 and died on December 29, 1882; he married Cynthia A. - - - - - who was born about 1818 and died on July 8, 1894. Both are buried in the Hollansburg Cemetery in Darke County, Ohio. Easm and Cynthia's children were named Nancy, Israel, William, Malina, Phoebe, Sarah, and Delilah. Andrew Sparks, born about 1777 and died on December 12, 1856, is thought to have been the father of Easm (or Eason) Sparks.

SPARKS FAMILIES ENUMERATED ON THE 1830 CENSUS OF MISSISSIPPI, continued:

In the QUARTERLY of March 1968, we published a record of all the Sparks families appearing on the 1850 census of Mississippi (Vol. XVI, No. 1, Whole No. 61). Brief information on the population of Mississippi was given in the introduction to that data (see page 1126, incorrectly numbered as 1108).

Here we present Sparks households as found on the 1840 census of Mississippi. Sparkses were found in only five counties for a total of eleven families. It seems probable, however, that the two men named Hardy Sparks in Lafayette County were the same man, even though they appeared on different pages and a 20-year-old male was listed in the household of one and not the other. Census takers sometimes called on the same household twice and sometimes missed another household completely.

As has been noted in the introduction to the 1830 census of Georgia and that for the 1840 census of Indiana appearing in this issue, only the name of the head of the household appeared in federal census records prior to 1850. Everyone in the household, including the head, was then enumerated in various age groups, with the males separated from the females.

SPARKS FAMILIES ENUMERATED ON THE 1840 CENSUS OF INDIANA

In previous issues of the QUARTERLY we have published a record of the Sparks families appearing on the 1820, 1830, and 1850 censuses of the state of Indiana. Those for 1820 and 1830 appeared in the issue for September 1958 (Vol. VI, No. 3, Whole No. 23, pp. 326-330). That for 1850 appeared over several issues, beginning on page 401 of that for June 1959 (Vol. VII, No. 2, Whole No. 26). Here we fill in the gap between 1830 and 1850.

Indiana became a state in 1816. It then had a population of about 75,000. By 1840 the population had increased to 685,866. Heavy immigration accounted for a large portion of this increase, and until the 1840's and 1850's that immigration was almost entirely from within the United States; the great bulk coming from the Southern states.

As has been noted in the introduction to the listing of Sparkses on the 1830 census of Georgia elsewhere in this issue, only the individual considered to be the head of the household was listed by name on any federal census prior to 1850. Everyone else living in the household, including hired hands, was enumerated in age categories by sex. These age categories were the same on the 1840 census as had been used in 1830.
